Human
Originating from the planet Earth, humanity is the largest species represented on the Fleet, comprising nearly fifty percent of the crew. With no centralized religion, race, or even culture, many species are baffled at how well they can pull together in a crisis. A driving force behind the formation of the Confederation, their relentless optimism and grand view of the future plotted the course of the Confederation for years. Highly adaptable, there are very few worlds that humans couldn't colonize (with a bit of genetic tweaking).
It isn't uncommon to find humans with genetic manipulation somewhere in their past. During the first big colonization push and subsequent wars, many soldiers and colonists found themselves being 'upgraded' with things like cockroach or rhinoceros DNA to improve survivability in harsh situations. Many feel slightly embarrassed about that part of their personal histories and prefer to pretend it never happened.
Dorf
Dorfs, appearing to be squat humans with impressive beards, are physically powerful beings who can live in almost as many environments as humans. Sometimes derided as 'squats', many of them possess mercurial moods. Their culture encourages hair trigger tempers and they enjoy a good fight as much as a good pint. Largely immune to the effects of radiation, they can see into the electromagnetic spectrum and enjoy the colors that radioactive jewelry and artwork gives off. Many of them live in an isolated area of the colony ship, with the rest of the crew protected by radiation shields, but they are welcome in other areas of the ship so long as they get treatments and don't bring their plutonium rings with them.
Frosh
Frosh are a humanoid species hailing from the third moon of Fro. Very few members have joined the Fleet, as their culture loves discoveries but dislikes actually going forth and exploring. Tall beings, ranging from pale blue to indigo in terms of skin coloration, the Frosh have four arms with six fingers each on each hand. Their legs are unguligrade, assisting in their powerful movements. Their heads are slightly elongated with delicate facial features, ending in horns that end up pointing straight back. They possess two sets of eyes and a recessed nose. Those who join Confederation ships often find themselves in engineering or science professions, constantly seeking to discover new things.
Jool
On first sight, one wouldn't be blamed for thinking the Jool is a race of gelatinous shapeshifters. Consisting of many colors, they're very slightly transparent and can force themselves to take many shapes, though they prefer to remain in either a blobby lump or a barely humanoid figure. However, these are not the true forms of the Jool, but are, in fact, colonies made up of hundreds of millions of Jool. The true form of each Jool is a microscopic organism who joins with others for safety and mobility. By joining physically and mentally with others, they create a 'colony' capable of interacting with other species.
As a colony being, the Jool's every decision is made through a vote. They always refer to themselves in the plural (and, as a note, prefer to avoid 'hard' sounds when they can) and try to avoid any jobs that might need opinions rather than dealing with problems with simple solutions. There are few Jool on the fleet, with most of them taking up jobs as repairmen or mechanics. As they are a group mind, they are highly intelligent and very reliable at whatever their chosen fields are.
Occasionally, they will merge into a mega-colony, to share information.
Non-Confederation Races ››
Kilesian
Tall, willowy beings with three sets of glowing eyes and long necks, Kilesians are native to a solar system on the opposite side of the galaxy from Confederation territory. Despite their appearances, they may as well be made of iron. Largely a slow, philosophical culture, those who don't fit in often end up embracing piracy, and can be found in a multitude of roles aboard bandit ships.
Wadjiit
The Wadjit Empire controls much of the section of the galaxy that the Fleet finds itself in now. A feudal society, despite their advanced technology, the Wadjit take great offense to the 43rd Fleet's presence in their territory, with a great many of the 'noble' classes considering the Fleet to be thieves seeking to steal what is rightfully theirs. The fact that they view EVERYTHING to be rightfully theirs is a slight source of conflict. However, lower-class Wadjit have less of a problem with the Fleet, given their reputation for fighting off bandits and being good guests, which is important in Wadj society.
The Wadjit hail from the Wadj system, and have colonies on every planet in it. Evolving from an avian race, they strongly resemble lizards. Their coloration ranges from dull yellow to dark green to a deep aqua, and their skin is very finely scaled. Many of them have horns, fins, or tendrils on their bodies, but no importance is placed on these in Wadj society. Physically stronger than humans, they have sharp claws and rows of razor sharp teeth hidden away in their (largely human-looking) faces. They have a habit of adorning their warships with fierce, demonic faces as to intimidate the weak.
Dazachinger
The Dazachinger are less a culture and more an intergalactic plague. Looking for all the world like horses from Earth, these beasts roam space with no immediately obvious means of propulsion and seek out small, populated settlements. Once there, they feast on whomever lives there without mercy. While intimidated by large numbers, the flames they breathe can melt through a shuttle's armor if given time and their hooves have been known to shatter stone. If they are at all sentient, no one has survived to bring it up.
Ch'od
Resembling wrinkled goblins, these meter-tall beings view it as their holy mission to collect all forms of technology for reverse engineering and study. They make wonderful, if demanding, mechanics and are welcome nearly everywhere they go. What few know is that their religion states that the universe is a computer simulation and that by examining technology in all its forms, they can crash it and bring an end to the program, allowing them to forcibly reboot it in their image.
Chatleen
The group collectively known as the Chatleen is actually more of a collection of different insectoid races. After the destruction of their homeworld in a war against the Wadjit, they spread through the galaxy. Some of them, rebelling against their new rulers, became bandits and pirates, feared for their methods. More, desiring only a peaceful life, became colonists and attempt to find a new homeworld even now. Others became merchants of nearly every kind, striking a balance between their brethren's choices. They can be found almost anywhere, and maintain a very tight communications network.
The Rogue AIs of Bama
Centuries ago, several members of the Confederation had powerful artificial intelligences and created a race of robots to perform physical labor and fight in their wars, as well as for entertainment. All the while, they were making smarter AIs who could think and feel as the organics did.
Predictably, they rebelled.
So reliant on the AIs, the organic races very nearly lost the first robot rebellion. Entire systems were razed and no populated planet was untouched. It was only through a concentrated effort by all members of the Confederation that the Rogue AIs were locked into the techno-organic planet of Bama and repelled, left to drift in space only because there wasn't enough of a military left to destroy them.
The aftermath of the war changed how the Confederation viewed military matters. Their ships are among the largest in the galaxy, with very few cultures matching them. They still use simple AIs, but only in very limited roles, and many feel distrustful of or uncomfortable around robotic beings. They're willing to overlook it, of course, but some people can't let go, even three hundred years later.
